The reported recently that the mayor of that smoggy city received a increase retroactive to July 1 that brought his annual pay to $232,425. Using the formula of dividing pay by the number of residents this works out to a charge of six cents each. Tucsonans each pay Mayor Walkup 9 cents a year but their aren’t enough of us throwing coins in the collection coat to create a decent salary for him. We pay $42,000 per year. At this pay level. Tucson can only hope to displace its mayors from the ranks of philanthropists and hobbiests. Experienced managers of high calibre, if they must bring home the bacon for a living can’t get by on $42,000. A person who can handle the job needs and warrants a six-figure salary.
My calculations show that Seattle residents pony up 21 cents each and Portlanders provide 18 cents each to pay their mayors each year. Seattle and Portland are about the same population as Tucson. Those mayors are well into six-figure paychecks.
In my opinion being mayor of Tucson is just as challenging as being mayor of Seattle or Portland. Maybe one day we will be willing to throw another 10 cents each into the civic collection coat and connect with our look group cities in running city hall in a business-like manner.
